The Hellfire had not been seen in the Inner Sphere for some time when a new variant appeared in in the hands of the Hell’s Horses as they invaded the Falcon and Wolf Occupation Zones. They only ever appeared in small numbers and no new examples have appeared since the Horses' arrival, making it highly likely that they were produced in the Homeworlds and the Horses have been unable to obtain new ones. It is speculated the Horses captured them through trials of possession or as isorla from the Star Adders.
The capabilities of the new variant have proven effective in combat. Armed with four plasma cannons, two extended range flamers, two standard flamers and two six-tube short range missile launchers, the Hellfire 3 has wreaked havoc with conventional forces. Combat vids have appeared showing a single Hellfire 3 taking apart two stars of conventional Wolf forces. Footage of Wolf tanks being set ablaze by missile impacts has ended speculation that the Horses are loading the Hellfire 3’s launchers with inferno ammunition. With so many incendiary weapons, this new variant seems to have been deliberately designed to deliver its namesake to its enemies.
